Care for Pelargonium
Unrooted Cuttings
View/Download as .pdf File
Preparation

• disinfect propagation area and equipment (tubs and boxes)
• rooting in trays: use new or disinfected trays
• floor or table heating is necessary

Growing medium

sterile propagation substrate pH 5,8-6,2 or Jiffy or Oasis
• without additional fertilizers
• assure open substrate
• during sticking the substrate should have propagation temperature
• substrate must be moist, not wet

Pots

If direct sticking in pots, use new pots only

Processing

as fast as possible - every minute is important
should the cuttings not be stuck immediately upon delivery

• open the box and store the cuttings at 46°F
• stick them to the first crown
• water so that the growing media has contact to the base
• first Zonal, then Ivies

Temperatures

1st-12th day day and night 68 °F ventilation temperature 80 °F
13th-20th day day 68°F night 65 °F ventilation temperature 74 °F
from 21st day day and night 65 °F ventilation temperature 70 °F
Use ventilated cultivation so that the plants can develop

Shading

• day 1-14 from 18.000 Lux
• day 15-21 from 20-25.000 Lux

Assimilation light

Light can be applied, with Son T 400 W (1 lamp 10 m2) when the cutting is turgid (3rd day)

Water for rooting

1. Spray mist:
• use spray mist instead of watering!
• only when foliage is dry
• if the heating is strong, also spray at night
• one day after potting the cutting has to stand firm
• cuttings that dehydrate, yellow and losses have to be expected.
• mist should be turned off after about 10 days

2. Rooting without spray mist is possible under fleece tents (use new material only):
• remove fleece tent immediately after production of the callus (10th day)
• with plastic cover, after the 4th day ventilation at night is necessary.
Avoid direct covering with fleece or plastic because it causes water drops; the risk of Botrytis is then very high.

Use of growth retardants

• Ivies and Zonals - according to needs - after 3 weeks first treatment with CCC 0,15%.
Depending on cutting quality and variety characteristics, a second treatment may be necessary.

Plant protection against Botrytis and Pythium

• cultivate with ventilation
• after 10 to 14 days'  treat against Botrytis
• to be repeated possibly after one week
• Preventive application against Pythium as a drench with fan-shaped jets so that both substrate and stems are covered.
